Gaining the upper hand in the era of information-Open Up!

Through the remarkable advances of societal transformations, extensive information has been available at fingertips and opting the relevant news has become a significant part of one’s assets. Thus, many arguments have arisen on whether people should be reported from diverse sources of information in order to be knowledgeable. In fact, the said issue has aroused extensive reactions among the citizens. However, it is obvious and undeniable that the optimal choice for people is to approach various sources for information. This conception is based on following two clarifications.

The major contention is that access to different sources of information provides comprehensive understanding of the news. To elaborate, each news differs from one another as they convey differing parts of the event, and as an active reader, it is crucial that one synthesizes reports from various sources to have a profound understanding. For example, in a situation of a terrorist attack, there might be a newspaper that only communicates information about what took place at the crime scene. On the other hand, another one might cover the motives of such assails and background information about the suspects. Moreover, it would be helpful to view video clips and photos included by other articles. Rather than listening to one aspect of what happened, it would be wiser to approach the event from diversified perspectives, piecing an array of knowledge together, to better analyze the information.

The next motive for my standpoint is that nowadays, it is possible to take an objective perspective with the help of a mixture of news. In the past when not many broadcasters were present, those financed by government and significant figures had the most influence. They occasionally reported distorted information highly favorable for their supporters, thus infringing citizenry’s right to know. On the contrary, in modern era, countless publishing companies are working both offline and online, with even laypeople having the opportunity to report news. An epitome of this would be when the Japanese government concealed reports after the leakage of radioactivity in Fukushima, in order to reassure their people. Although they hindered newspapers to unveil truths about the incident, several bold personal bloggers took the initiative to measure the level of radiation, alerting and informing their citizens about the severity of the outbreak. Needless to say, diversified information sources form unbiased judgment, allowing information from various points of view.

Based on aforementioned arguments, it is conspicuous that procuring information from manifold sources holds more advantages when it comes to wanting to be well-informed. The merits of comprehending details and keeping objectivity are the two justifications to validate such view. Thus, no other ideas in my mind outweigh the points presented above.
